Virginia Tech vs Vanderbilt Prediction, Game Preview, and Betting Lines

    By Pete Fiutak,

It’s a wee bit of an odd pairing from two power conferences. It’s just the tenth time Virginia Tech and Vanderbilt have met despite only being a not-that-far-in-college-sports-matchup-world 400 miles apart.

The last meeting was in 1989 - it was an 18-0 Hokie win.

Vanderbilt could use a win in the worst of ways considering the nasty SEC slate coming up, but on the other side, Virginia Tech doesn’t have it all that bad after this in what should be a huge season under Brent Pry.

    - Week 1 Schedule, Predictions

    Why Vanderbilt Will Win

The Commodores have some ballers on the offensive side.

New Mexico State transfer Diego Pavia is a fun all-around quarterback who knows how to keep things moving, and he has his former offensive coordinator - Tim Beck - around to help get this going. Expect more flash from the Commodore O.

The linebacking corps is experienced enough to keep Virginia Tech star QB Kyron Drones from getting loose, and the pass rush should be far, far more dangerous with an improved front.

    However …

    Why Virginia Tech Will Win

The Virginia Tech defense is about to be a problem.

The linebacking corps is loaded with big hitters, the secondary will once again be a major strength, and the mix should overwhelm the Commodore offensive front in key spots.

Along with Drones, the experience on the offensive side will matter. The Hokies need more consistency and a whole lot more pop, but the veterans up front will play a big role for the ground game and the big plays should emerge at the skill spots. Give Drones time and look out.

Virginia Tech vs Vanderbilt: Who Will Win

This should be more fun than you might think.

Vanderbilt has a few nice parts and a whole lot of pluck to keep on attacking a very, VERY jacked up Virginia Tech team that’s expecting this to be the start of something huge.

The Hokies will win, but they’re not going to roll. Vanderbilt will hold up well on the lines, but too many key second half drives will stall.
