Deion Sanders Claims Colorado's Shedeur Sanders, Travis Hunter Should Have Won Both Week 1 Awards

Following their 31-26 victory over the North Dakota State Bison in Week 1 of the 2024 college football season, two star players on the Colorado Buffaloes were recognized for their impressive performances, but head coach Deion Sanders believes they should have swept the Week 1 awards.
As for the awards, Colorado wide receiver/cornerback Travis Hunter won the Hornung National Player of the Week for his 132-yard, three-touchdown performance last Saturday. Meanwhile, quarterback Shedeur Sanders was named an honorable mention for the Davey O'Brien National Player of the Week award.
The Buffs' second-year head coach continued to vouch for his players on his Coaches Show Thursday, where he claimed that both players should be getting more media attention based on their skill set and Week 1 showing.
“You got a guy who threw for the most yards in college football, you got a guy who was proved that he was the most spectacular player in college football,” Sanders said. “Shouldn’t those two be talked about all week about the two leading Heisman guys? Or the weekly award should have gone to those two guys.
Sanders continued by insinuating that the two did not sweep the Week 1 awards because it would give the Buffaloes too much positive publicity.
“But it’s almost like, ‘No, we can’t do that. Their coach is Deion Sanders, we can’t do that. I’m not gonna let him get away with that,'” the coach added.
Shedeur Sanders finished the 31-26 victory with 26-of-34 passes for 445 yards, four touchdowns, and one interception. However, Sanders' performance was not enough to outshine Cam Ward's 385-yard, three-touchdown day against the Florida Gators.
Even though Coach Prime feels his son was slighted in the Week 1 awards, both athletes will have another opportunity to claim the awards again in Week 2 when Colorado travels to take on their historic rival Nebraska Cornhuskers on Sept. 7 at 7:30 p.m. ET. The game will be broadcast on NBC and Peacock.
