Mike McNeill’s Diary for Tuesday, August 20, 2024: Jesus, Bart Hester
One just has to pray that Arkansas legislators act with wisdom and compassion. State Sen. Bart Hester went a little crazy during a meeting on Monday dealing with the Arkansas Department of Corrections budget and in particular, the state’s obligation to meet the minimum health care needs of inmates. “What we are being asked to do is pay more for prisoners, our rapists, our pedophiles, our murderers, more in health care than you are for your officers’ health care … that’s the commitment we are making as a state — that the worst among us … deserve the best health care,” Hester said. Our immediate impression was, well, Jesus, Bart. More specifically, Jesus Christ as quoted in Matthew 25: 43-45. In a state that runs a three-quarter-billion dollar budget surplus, nothing prevents Arkansas from providing prisoners (and everyone else) with access to decent health care. Arkansans and Americans must come to grips with the fact that we don’t have a crime problem so much as we have mental health, substance abuse, child abuse and basic educational attainment problems. We have failed as a state and a nation to deal with these. If we treated those issues among young Arkansans with the same fervor that people like Sen. Hester have for punishment, meanness and blood lust, we might knock down these huge prison expenses on the back end of the justice system.
