MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Mid-Southerns now have a new place to enjoy one of the world’s fastest-growing sports – pickleball.

Pickleball 901 has opened a new, indoor facility at Carriage Crossing in Collierville.

The new facility is inside what was once a Bed Bath and Beyond, which has been transformed with eight pickleball courts.

People we talked to said this is an affordable hobby they want everyone to enjoy.

Johnny Williams is one of the dozens who came out to enjoy the grand opening of Pickleball 901’s first pop-up indoor club in Collierville.

“This is a dream come true, I’m enjoying myself,” Williams said.

Now the owner is making sure there is plenty of action in the now-closed department store, keeping business in the Carriage Crossing shopping center.

“We’ve transformed an old Bed Bath and Beyond into a premium pickleball club,” said Adam Clay, co-founder of Pickleball 901. “When they’re done here, they’ll go buy a book, get some coffee, go eat at Nashoba, go to Frida’s, whatever.”

The new location is set to be a place to hang out, with arcade games, televisions, a lounge area, and free wifi at a reasonable price for families.

“So, we’re going to have what I call the bowling alley model. We’re going to have a day pass, it’s going to be $12, that’s our retail price but we’ll sell bundles. If you want to buy 5 it will be at a discount,” said Clay.

Williams couldn’t be a bigger spokesperson for the sport.

“Lovin’ playing pickleball. At 58 I can play this game, it don’t hurt my knees, it’s enjoyable, you make a lot of friends,” he said.

Pickleball 901 encourages beginners to visit them. They say the spot is especially great for young people, as it gives them something to do this summer.

“Mom, Dad, bring the kids out, we’ll work with them, we got great teachers here,” Williams said.

For this opening week, playing is free. They are open from 6 a.m. until 9 p.m., and you can rent a paddle for $5.
