RAGBRAI LI begins in southwest Iowa in pleasant summer conditions
GLENWOOD, Iowa — The Register's Annual Great Bike Ride Across Iowa is now underway, as the 51st installment began in Glenwood along the Missouri River Sunday morning. The 7-day RAGBRAI will take riders on a southerly route across Iowa, making overnight stops in Red Oak, Atlantic, Winterset, Knoxville, Ottumwa, and Mt. Pleasant before arriving in Burlington Saturday to dip their tires in the Mississippi River.
Rare unplowed land near Ames may be how Iowa prairie looked 150 years ago
(Radio Iowa) – Researchers recently discovered what’s known as a “remnant prairie” at the Iowa State University Horticulture Research Station and they’re working to restore it. Remnant prairies have never been plowed or completely converted into non-native species. Only about zero-point-one percent of this original habitat remains in Iowa, though it once covered nearly 80-percent of the state. Nick Howell is superintendent for the horticulture research station. “This was found as a fluke,” Howell says. “When I started here in 2006, you couldn’t even get to it. It was just completely full of scrub brush.”

Golf Classic Fundraiser Happening This Week in Des Moines
(Des Moines, IA) -- A pair of fundraising events in Des Moines will raise money for the ALS Association this week. The Michael R. Myers Golf Classic will happen on Friday morning at Copper Creek Golf Course. The following evening, the Legacy Social will be held at the Embassy Club West in West Des Moines. DSM Fire Department responds to fire near University Ave. and 23rd Street
