Colman and Canova both win on Tuesday
In Cornbelt baseball, Colman took a lead in the top of the 1st inning, and held it throughout the game, in a 6-3 win over Flandreau Blue Teal on Tuesday. Paul Clark hit a double as part of a 2-run 1st inning for Colman. Chris Burke struggled with his control in the late innings, but still pitched a complete game with 5 walks and 8 strikeouts. He also had 2 hits and an RBI at the plate. Clark finished with 2 hits, 2 RBI, and a run scored. Ethan Johnson took the loss for the Blue Teal, surrendering 5 runs on 7 hits over 5 innings. Colman improved to 6-10, while the Blue Teal fell to 4-12.
Dell Rapids 16U Holds off West Central
Dell Rapids 16U held off a seventh-inning rally by West Central to earn a 4-3 win at home on Monday, July 15th:. West Central scored in the top of the second inning to take a 1-0 lead. Dell Rapids would tie the game with a run in the bottom of the fourth inning. The score remained tied 1-1 until the bottom of the sixth inning. Dell Rapids scored three times to go ahead 4-1. West Central rallied for two runs in the top of the seventh and had the bases loaded with two outs, but a pop out to the pitcher ended the game.
Dell Rapids 14U Wins Region 5A Tournament
The Dell Rapids 14U baseball team won the Region 5A Tournament, which was held in Dell Rapids, with two wins over Canton on Monday, July 15th and Tuesday, July 16th. The two wins give Dell Rapids a spot in the South Dakota VFW State A Tournament. Dell Rapids 3, Canton...
Baltic 14U Wins Region 4B Tournament
The Baltic 14U baseball team pushed their ticket to the state tournament by winning the Region 4B tournament on Tuesday, July 16th. They earned wins over Parker and Garretson. The semifinal went back and forth before Baltic scored enough runs in the bottom of the sixth to secure the win. Baltic took the lead first with a run in the bottom of the first inning. Parker went ahead 3-1 with three in the top of the second. Baltic then scored a run in the bottom of the second and three in the bottom of the third to go back in front 5-3. Parker added two runs in the top of the fourth, and the game was tied 5-5 after four innings of play.
River Dawgs Can’t Hold Early Lead
The Baltic River Dawgs had an early lead against the Sioux Falls Squirrels at home on Sunday, July 14th. The Squirrels, however, rallied for a 10-6 victory. The River Dawgs scored four times in the bottom of the first for a 4-0 lead. Sioux Falls cut the lead to one, 4-3, with three runs in top of the fourth. Baltic added two more runs in the bottom of the inning for a 6-3 advantage. The Squirrels then scored three in the top of the fifth, two in the sixth, and two more in the seventh for the 10-6 lead.
West Central 14U Splits Two Region 4A Games
The West Central 14U baseball team played two games at the Region 4A tournament in Colton on Monday, July 15th. They won their first game, but lost the second game of the day. West Central scored 10 straight runs to take the opening round win over the Chargers. Two runs were scored in the bottom of the first to give West Central a 2-0 lead. Sioux Falls tied the game with two runs in the top of the second. West Central took the lead again, 3-2, with a run in the bottom of the second. The Chargers tied the game one last time, 3-3, in the top of the third. West Central then put the game away with a seven-run bottom of the third. They scored three more in the bottom of the fourth.
Madison wins 14U VFW Region 3A
The Madison 14U VFW baseball team is heading to state, after taking the Region 3A tournament on Tuesday. Madison won games over Volga and Flandreau on Monday to open play. Volga then defeated Flandreau 21-8 on Tuesday to set up a rematch, with Madison needing to win one of two games against Volga to claim the region title. Madison needed only one game, winning Tuesday 4-3.
Phils Can’t Keep Pace with Madison
The Dell Rapids Phils suffered a 12-2 setback in Madison on Tuesday, July 16th. Sutton Williams was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the top of the first inning to give Dell Rapids a 1-0 lead. That was the only lead Dell Rapids had. Madison scored three runs in the bottom of the first and then five more in the second to take an 8-1 lead. Treyse Eastman had an RBI sacrifice fly in the top of the fourth for an 8-2 score, but Madison scored four more times in the bottom of the fifth to end the game on the 10-run rule.
PBR Breaks Open Game in Late Innings
Dell Rapids PBR turned a 1-0 lead into an 11-4 victory over Colman on Sunday, July 14th. PBR scored a run in the top of the first for a 1-0 lead. The score remained 1-0 until the top of the sixth inning. Dell Rapids scored four times in the sixth, two in the seventh, and three in the eighth for a 10-0 lead. Colman would get four runs in the bottom of the eight, and Dell Rapids scored one more in the ninth.
Big Third Inning Leads to Win for Baltic/Colton Legion
Baltic/Colton used a nine-run third inning to lead them to a 15-7 win in Alexandria on Tuesday, July 16th. Both teams put two runs on the board in the first inning for a 2-2 tie. Baltic/Colton then scored nine runs in the top of the third to take the lead for good. They added another run in the the top of the fourth making the score 12-2. Alexandria scored four times in the bottom of the fourth to cut the lead in half, 12-6. Baltic/Colton added two more runs in the fifth and another in the sixth for a 15-6 score. Alexandria added one more in the bottom of the sixth.
Gamecocks Hold off Blue Teal
The Humboldt/Hartford Gamecocks held off the Flandreau Blue Teal for an 11-10 win on Sunday, July 14th. The Blue Teal scored three runs in the bottom of the second and three in the bottom of the third for an early 6-0 lead. The Gamecocks got three runs in the top of the fourth to cut the lead in half, 6-3. Flandreau, however, responded with three runs in the bottom of the fourth to go back ahead 9-3. Humboldt/Hartford then chipped away at the lead. They scored two runs in the fifth and another in the sixth to make the score 9-6. The Gamecocks then took the lead, 10-9, with a four-run top of the seventh. They added an insurance run in the ninth to make the score 11-9, which was needed. Flandreau got a run in the bottom of the ninth, but the game-tying run was stranded on base.
Madison 14U comes back from seven run deficit to beat Flandreau
The Madison 14U baseball team went 2-0 in the first day of the Region 3A VFW baseball tournament. Maison opened play with a 3-1 win over Volga on Monday. Madison opened the scoring in the 3rd inning, bringing in a run on a balk. Volga added a run themselves in the bottom of the inning on a wild pitch. From there, starting pitchers Henry Veenhof and Damon Uecker held the offense in check. In the top of the 8th inning, Kaysen Gust hit a ground ball that was misplayed by Volga and scored Luke Johnson. Veenhof then lined a ball to right, allowing Gust to tag up and make the score 3-1 Madison. Relief pitcher Brody Fink slammed the door in the bottom of the 8th to secure the win.
Dell Rapids 16U Blanks Canton
The Dell Rapids 16U baseball team shut out Canton 12-0 on Friday, July 12th. Dell Rapids scored in every inning while holding Canton to just two hits. They got two runs in the first, two in the second, two in the third, and then had a big six-run fourth inning. The game ended on the 10-run rule in the fifth inning.
Broncos win 6th in a row, Hoglund homers again for the Mudcats.
The Madison Broncos won their 6th game in a row on Sunday, beating the Canova Gang 2-1 in extra innings. Canova opened the scoring with their only run of the game in the 6th inning, coming on a Kendall Gassman RBI single. Ty Jorgenson’s double in the 8th inning scored Heith Williams to tie the game. In the 10th, Dawson Bakker singled to score Peyton Wolf and give the Broncos the lead. Tyler Tappe then locked down the win, retiring Canova in order in the 10th.
Mudcats Beat Both Flandreau Teams
The Dell Rapids Mudcats played both of the Flandreau teams in their last two games, getting wins over both of the teams. Kris Regas nearly threw a perfect game as he allowed no runs on just one hit with 18 strikeouts in a 12-0 Mudcat win over the Blue Teal on Thursday, July 11th.
Phils Win Two of Last Three Games
The Dell Rapids Phils won two of their last three games. They hosted Lake Norden on Friday, July 12th and then traveled to Watertown for a doubleheader on Sunday, July 14th. Early runs helped the Phils to a 7-1 win over Lake Norden on Friday. They scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning, two in the second, and three in the third for an early 7-0 lead. They maintained the 7-0 lead until the top of the sixth. Lake Norden would get their lone run in the sixth inning.
Baltic/Colton Legion Falls at Home to Vermillion
The Baltic/Colton legion baseball team suffered a home loss against Vermillion on Friday, July 12th by a score of 6-2. Vermillion took the lead in the top of the first, 1-0, and never trailed in the game. They added another run in the top of the third for 2-0 lead. Baltic/Colton cut the lead in half, 2-1, with a run in the bottom of the third. Each team would score a run again in the fifth inning for a 3-2 score. Vermillion then added three runs in the top of the seventh for the win.
