(Colorado) The art scene in Colorado offers something for everyone.

The Centennial State has world-class art museums, sculpture gardens, and remarkable art finds, like the James Turrell Skyspace.

The Turrell Skyspace uses natural and kinetic light to create a heightened sensory experience.

The artist began creating Skyspaces in the 1970s, and he has more than 85 installations worldwide, including one in Colorado in the small town of Green Mountain Falls.

Green Mountain Falls is west of Colorado Springs, nestled in a picturesque valley and surrounded by Pike National Forest. It has a small man-made lake with a frequently photographed gazebo, great hiking trails, and the only Skyspace in Colorado.

The Skyspace is built on the side of a cliff, blending into the natural landscape with views of Gazebo Lake. It is one of the few Skyspaces with a retractable roof, so it can be used year-round regardless of weather.

It is a short, steep hike on wide, well-marked trails to the 18-foot-tall structure. At the halfway mark, there is a town overlook with restrooms, a drinking fountain, picnic tables, and beautiful scenery.

The Skyspace offers a serene, quiet space to listen and reflect. Often, the only sounds are the birds and the wind blowing through the trees.

The Skyspace is open to the public on Thursday through Sunday with several formal showtimes, including sunrise and sunset shows.

Visitors can watch darkness turn to light or light fade to dark during the fifty-minute show. The experience is enhanced with kinetic light projection, which offers a unique sensory event.

Advanced tickets are required for the formal shows and are $10 each.

On days the venue is open, guests are welcome to visit the Skyspace outside the formal showtimes without a ticket. Visitors can hike up the trail and enjoy the structure in its natural state without additional light effects.

There is free parking in designated lots or around town.

The Skyspace is a unique blend of nature and art in a charming small town. Add it to the summer bucket list.
