    Above the Noise community engagement events planned in Grand Junction area

    Colorado Newsline editor Quentin Young will participate in public events in the Grand Junction area as part of the Above the Noise initiative .

    Above the Noise seeks to create a resilient and sustainable media ecosystem in Colorado while fostering community listening sessions. It was launched by Rocky Mountain Public Media in partnership with Colorado Press Association, Colorado Media Project, and Colorado State University’s Center for Public Deliberation. The initiative supports 40 small newsrooms across the state, including Newsline.

    Central to Above the Noise is a program of community engagement. Organizers have already hosted events in Edwards, Salida, Florence, Denver and other locations. The events include film screenings and discussions.

    Two Above the Noise public events are scheduled in the Grand Junction area:

    Fruita

    • When : 6-9 p.m., Sept. 11
    • Where : Fruita Arts Recreation Marketplace (The FARM), 160 S. Park Square, Fruita CO

    Clifton

    • When : 5-8 p.m., Sept. 12
    • Where : Clifton Library, 3270 D 1/2 Road, Clifton CO

    The events feature a screening of “Undivide Us,” a documentary that seeks to promote a healthy national conversation in advance of ⁠the 2024 elec⁠t⁠⁠i⁠on, and a community discussion. The event is free, but participants are asked to register. Young will be available to answer questions and speak with community members.

    There are almost 600 local news outlets in Colorado, and many face challenges, such as decreasing funding and lack of other resources. Above the Noise helps newsrooms adapt to a changing media landscape by supporting storytelling that’s relevant to local audiences and diverse communities.
