Support local shelters during National Foster a Pet Month

(COLORADO SPRINGS) — Nonprofit organization Petco Love celebrates June as National Foster a Pet Month to inspire communities like Colorado Springs to get involved with their local animal shelter.

During the summer months, animal shelters are the most overrun. Temporarily fostering a pet helps support local shelters and reduce euthanasia across the nation.

“Shelters across the nation are in crisis. And loving, happy, healthy pets are at risk of being euthanized simply due to lack of space. Pet fostering is the answer to eliminate unnecessary euthanasia of shelter pets,” said Petco Love President, Susanne Kogut. “If just 2% more of the 87 million pet-owning households fostered just one pet a year, we could end euthanasia in America’s shelters tomorrow.”

Just in the Colorado Springs area, there are over 300 pets including cats and dogs ready to be adopted.

Fostering for a short time can save a life. Fostering a pet can range from a few weeks to several months until they are ready for adoption or until a shelter has space for them. Some financial costs may be associated with fostering, but most organizations cover all the cost of necessities such as food, bedding, and veterinary care.

Some pros of fostering include helping a pet in need, preparing them for their permanent home, and enjoying the joys of having a pet without the long-term commitment.
