(COLORADO SPRINGS) — Colorado Springs Utilities (Springs Utilities) has been encouraging customers to lower their energy usage during peak hours to help keep stress off the energy grid. In order to help with this goal, Springs Utilities gives some tips on how to keep your house cool and lower your energy bill during the hot months.

Though Springs Utilities is recognized as one of the most reliable electric utilities in the nation, with power available more than 99.99% of the time, it recognizes that to ensure a reliable electric gird and manage costs, cooperation from the community is required. Reducing energy use between 4 p.m. and 8 p.m., which are the hours of peak usage, helps manage future utility costs and ensure service reliability, improved air quality and effeicient management of resources.

Customers can reduce their energy bills by cutting back during peak hours, as appliance usage often unintentionally heats the home during the hottest times. By using appliances earlier or later in the day, they can prevent their air conditioners from having to work overtime.

Other tips to reduce utility bills are:

    • Open windows at night or early morning and use fans to circulate the air. Once your home is cool, close the blinds to keep the heat out.
    • Ceiling fans should spin counterclockwise to push cool air down. Pair them with portable fans and open windows for maximum airflow.
    • Set thermostats higher on hot days and even higher when you’re out or asleep. Setting the thermostat to 78°F or more can save about 10% on energy bills. Plus, you can get a $50 rebate on a smart thermostat.
    • Keep your AC in top shape with regular check-ups and filter changes, which can save another 15% on energy use. Seal drafty doors or windows to save up to 20% on heating and cooling costs.
    • Boost home efficiency with new insulation and earn up to $1,500 in rebates, a 275% increase from last year.
