(COLORADO SPRINGS) — Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) caught a video of a bear running past a house in Rockrimmon on Sunday, July 21, prompting a reminder of west-side bear safety.

In the post by CPW on X (formerly known as Twitter), the caption for the video, shown below, said that it was lucky that the garage door was closed when the black bear ran past, as they are voracious eaters with powerful noses. If they smell pet food or sweets from an open door, they might enter and create a potentially dangerous conflict.

In March 2020, an ordinance took effect intending to reduce bear activity in Westside Colorado Springs, requiring residents west of I-25 to secure their trash by:

    • Only put out their trash between 5 a.m. and 7 p.m. on trash collection days, and otherwise store them in a secured location, such as a garage, or shed at all other times.
    • Storing trash in a certified bear-proof container
    • Recycle bins are not required to be secured.
