Long snapper Camden Dempsey speaks on critical role as Colorado’s ‘governor’

Colorado has its “dawgs” and its “leaders,” but nobody truly compares to the unique role Camden Dempsey owns as the Buffs’ “governor.”

Nicknamed the “governor” by head coach Deion Sanders, the junior long snapper has become an ambassador of sorts within the new-look CU football program. His responsibilities include highlighting players’ off-field achievements and uniting both sides of the locker room.

“I’m trying to keep (updated with) what guys are doing, whether it comes down to NIL (name, image and likeness) or whether it comes to the stuff that they’re doing in the community. I want to be able to highlight that,” Dempsey said following Colorado’s first fall camp practice on Monday. “In terms of my role, nothing has changed on the field, but when it comes down to the locker room, I’m chatting with guys more, trying to bring the two sides of the locker room closer together.”

So far, Dempsey believes his efforts have produced noticeable results.

“I think guys are feeling a lot more power to share what they’re doing,” Dempsey said. “They want to go do stuff now in the community, which I think is really cool. They feel like they’ve got a way to actually have a voice.”

Dempsey is currently preparing for his fourth season with the Buffs. He made his first career appearance last year during Colorado’s Week 10 game against Arizona.
