COLUMBIA, Conn. (WTNH) — Two men were arrested on Monday in Columbia for wielding machetes and driving under the influence.

Man arrested in Meriden after search of property with violent past

Police conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle after receiving reports that two men emerged from the woods at recreation fields on Hennequin Road stumbling and carrying machetes. The men, identified as 43-year-old Benjamin Deleon-Chach and 53-year-old Fabian Simaj-Tum, explained to police that they were fishing for crawfish at a nearby river and had the machetes to protect themselves against snakes.

Police then conducted field sobriety testing on Deleon-Chach, who was driving the vehicle, and determined that he was under the influence. Both men were charged with breach of peace in the second degree, and Deleon-Chach was charged with a DUI and operating a motor vehicle without a license.

Both men have been released on bond.
