Firefighters battled a massive fire Thursday evening in a building that houses Tollbooth Antiques in Columbia borough in Lancaster County.

Columbia Borough Fire Department posted on Facebook that fire companies from York and Lancaster counties were fighting the three-alarm blaze at the warehouse, which stands near the Route 462 bridge and the Susquehanna River.

Smoke from the fire could be seen from as far away as the Hallam area in York County and Manheim Township in Lancaster County, Lancaster Online reported. Firefighters rushed to the blaze around 8:30 p.m.

A Pennsylvania State Police fire marshal is on the scene of the fire this morning, Trooper James Grothey said.

This marks the third large building in the region that has been severely damaged by fire in three months.

A massive warehouse in York was destroyed by a six-alarm fire last Friday. York fire officials and detectives are working to determine what caused the blaze at 951 Elm St. It housed multiple tenants, including Herr Tool Sales owned by Tom Herr of Lancaster. He said the owner of the building had been working on renovations to it .

In April, a six-alarm inferno tore through an old furniture factory warehouse in Stewartstown . The cause of that fire has not been released. Eureka Volunteer Fire Chief Todd Gibney said at the time that it could take weeks, months, or longer to determine because of the level of destruction . A developer had been working on plans to rehabilitate the building into luxury apartments.

Tollbooth Antiques customers heartbroken over the loss

Tollboth Antiques did not post about the fire on its Facebook page, but some customers shared with the business their heartbreak over the loss.

"We have so many memories of days spent here enjoying all of the beautiful collections," one person commented on the business's Facebook page. "Thank you for providing us with the most amazing experience of antiquing for the 10 years we have been coming there."

A gift shop in Lancaster offered to assist the business.

Tollbooth Antiques opened in the spring of 2011, according to Lancaster Online . The 40,000-square-foot warehouse formerly was the Kahn Lucas factory, which produced children's clothing.
