Despite a dozen offensive linemen being injured and having to start nine different groupings on the offensive line to start the 2023 season, South Carolina’s players aren’t making any excuses for this past year.
While the Gamecocks will look to replace the production of Spencer Rattler and Xavier Legette, Dowell Loggains will enter his second season as offensive coordinator for South Carolina to go along with talent at multiple positions.
“I think we’ve got playmakers pretty much everywhere you look on the field. At wide receiver. At tight end, running back, quarterback,” Doty said on Monday at SEC Media Days. “You talk about the strides (that the offense has) made this offseason and this past spring ball. I just can’t say enough good things about… the big guys up front because (of the) criticism and stuff that they took last season. They’ve done nothing but work their tails off and do everything they can to make sure that that doesn’t happen again.”
With much talent and proven depth returning on the OL this season, that unit could easily be one of South Carolina’s offensive strengths. Still, there are question marks at multiple positions including wide receiver. But as Doty shared, the wideouts are doing everything they can to grow as a room both on and off the field.
“We go out and throw a couple times a week and we get good reps in with the rest of the quarterbacks. A couple of times a week we’ll do stuff with coach (Mike) Furry. He’s done a great job of getting us together and just doing little outings. We’ve gone paint balling, we went to an arcade with go-karts. Stuff like that. Everybody hangs out and has fun. Real lighthearted. But during the week, we’re working out and we’re getting after it. Everybody knows that we have each others backs and everybody is gonna support each other no matter what.”
Although LaNorris Sellers hasn’t officially been named the Week 1 starter at quarterback yet, it’ll be his job to lose in fall camp. Having played in 30 collegiate games during his career, with six starts at quarterback, Doty shared what that room has looked like.
“LaNorris still has to do a great job of continuing to get better, leading the offense, and the team. But, I mean, we’ve got guys in that room that no matter who is out on the field, we’re going to be put in a position to have success and win games… I think we’re in a really good place, obviously, physically and mentally going into camp to where we can hit the ground running on day one and carry that momentum into week zero.”
