In an episode of College Football Live from SEC Media Days this week, ESPN’s Greg McElroy was one of the analysts who weighed in on 2024 SEC win totals, including the over/under win total for Clemson’s arch rival, South Carolina.

The over/under win total for South Carolina is set at 5.5, and McElroy said he’s picking the over on that number for Shane Beamer’s team.

“I was originally going to go under here. I’m actually going to go over,” McElroy said. “And part of me is feeling more and more optimistic, after having talked with Shane Beamer, that they’re going to be really solid defensively. Now, they might not win a ton of games because their offense scores 28 or 30 or 35, but I think they can keep some teams in check.”

McElroy touched on some of the matchups on South Carolina’s 2024 schedule , including the games vs. LSU (Sept. 14), vs. Ole Miss (Oct. 5), at Vanderbilt (Nov. 9), vs. Missouri (Nov. 16) – and last but not least, the regular season rivalry finale at Clemson (Nov. 30).

“I look at some of those games. LSU at home, is that one they can get potentially, can they get Ole Miss at home? Those are big questions,” McElroy said. “I think they can go to Vandy and get a win. I think they can get Missouri potentially at home, I think that’s possible. They’ve gone to Clemson and won in the past. So, I’m going to take the over. I think defensively and their ball control identity will help them a lot and getting closer to that win total.”

South Carolina is coming off a 5-7 (3-5 SEC) season in 2023, which marked Beamer’s third season as the Gamecocks’ head coach. Clemson beat South Carolina, 16-7, in Columbia on Nov. 25 to keep the Gamecocks from bowl eligibility.

This year will mark the 121st installment of Clemson’s rivalry with South Carolina when the two teams meet again at Memorial Stadium. The Tigers are 73-43-4 all-time against the Gamecocks, including a 19-11-1 mark at home since the rivalry transitioned to a home-and-home format in 1960.

Clemson has won eight of the series’ last nine games and has outscored South Carolina by an average of 21.1 points per game in that span.
