Lane Kiffin knows how to get people going.

On Wednesday, Kiffin did not just tweet a video of wide receiver Antwane “Juice” Wells Jr., the star pass catcher who transferred from South Carolina to Ole Miss this offseason , he put the Gamecocks legendary “2001” entrance song behind the video.

He did not specially mention South Carolina, but Gamecock fans were able to read between the lines. The comments are, well, interesting, with many referring to the fact Wells sat out most of the 2023 season with a foot injury that coaches seemed to believe he could’ve played through.

Wells initially transferred to South Carolina from James Madison in 2022 and blossomed into the Gamecocks’ top receiver, catching 68 passes for over 900 yards and a half-dozen touchdowns. Even better: In South Carolina’s victories over Tennessee and Clemson, Wells hauled in a combined 20 passes for over 300 yards. He was spectacular. Then he vanished.

Last season, Wells only played in three games. As he sat out for the final nine weeks of the season, head coach Shane Beamer was asked every few days about the chances Wells would return in 2023 and, even until the end, never fully ruled it out.

On Nov. 20, Wells posted he will “be back next year ,” and, 10 days later, reports began to surface that Wells was headed to the transfer portal.

All that is to say Wells did not leave on great terms with the Gamecock faithful. It did not help that during the recruiting process, Kiffin was not shy about wanting Wells, posting a picture of a South Carolina golf cart in Columbia and even launching a hoodie brand called “Juice.”

At SEC Media Days last week, Beamer was asked if he had any comments on what Wells would bring to Ole Miss. Beamer looked as though he’d rather walk a mile barefoot through broken glass than answer the question.

“Good player. Wish him well,” Beamer said. “Know he’s excited about his time in Oxford.”

The drama will all culminate on Oct. 5, when Ole Miss will travel east and play inside what is sure to be a hostile Williams-Brice Stadium.

It will be the first time Beamer and Kiffin have faced off as head coaches and it will mark the first time the Rebels have played in Columbia since 2009.
