Familiar face returning to South Carolina Gamecocks’ athletics department

The University of South Carolina is hiring Jeff Crane as the athletics department’s Senior Deputy Director of Athletics, sources tell GamecockCentral.com.

It’s a homecoming for Crane, who has served at Memphis as the Deputy Athletics Director since April 2019. He previously spent over a decade working for Gamecock Athletics from 2006 until taking his role at Memphis.

Crane will replace the position vacated by Chance Miller, who became the new athletics director at Coastal Carolina this summer.

It is expected that Crane will help the Gamecocks significantly in athletics fundraising. During his previous stint at South Carolina, he was responsible for $175 million in funding for student-athlete scholarships and facilities, according to GoTigersGo.com.

He also led the Gamecocks’ seat donation plan that resulted in an additional $7 million windfall for the athletics department, plus led the school to a new record in donors – over 19,000.

Crane’s first role at South Carolina was as the Director of Marketing, a position he assumed in July of 2006. From there, he steadily climbed the ladder in the Gamecocks’ athletics department.

He transitioned to Assistant Director for Development in 2008, then was promoted to Senior Associate AD for Development and the Gamecock Club in 2012.

In 2017, he was named Executive Associate Athletics Director. Crane also has athletics director experience, serving as the Interim AD at USC Upstate in 2018 and as the interim AD at Memphis this year.

He spent time at TCU as the Horned Frogs’ Assistant Director of Marketing at TCU from 2001 until 2004. He was promoted to Director of Marketing for the next two seasons in Fort Worth.rom April 2001 to July 2004 and as Director of Marketing from July 2004 to July 2006.

Crane and his wife, Allison, have two boys, Ford and Crews, and a daughter, Elle.
