COLUMBUS, Ga. ( WRBL ) — From July 1 to July 12, pet owners can retrieve their impounded cats and dogs from Columbus Animal Care & Control without paying “Returned to Owner” fees.

This fee waiver is part of the shelter’s “Amnesty Program.” Violations of local ordinances and state-mandated vaccination requirements are still being enforced. Pet owners are responsible for citations that could be issued for any related violations.

Anyone who finds a stray animal is encouraged to use the shelter’s “Homeward Bound Project.” This offers microchip scanning services for animals found throughout the city.

Locals can visit any of these fire stations to have an animal scanned:

    • Fort Benning Road Station 10
    • Macon Road Station 9
    • Whitesville Road Station 8
    • St. Mary’s Road Station 4
    • Rose Hill Station 2

The shelter says the project aims to cut down on shelter intakes as well as reunite pets with their owners sooner than later.
