U.S. DOE Awards Two Indiana Automotive Facilities $375 Million in Federal Grants

KOKOMO / COLUMBUS, Ind. — The U.S. Department of Energy announced on Thursday that they would be awarding 9 grants to 11 auto facilities throughout the country including two in Indiana.

The Fiat-Chrysler Automotive plant in Kokomo will receive $300 Million in order to make changes to their Indiana Transmission Plant that would increase their production of Electric Drive Modules for electric vehicles. They say that this process will support the local community by providing job training for those already employed and potentially create additional jobs.

Further south, in Columbus, the Cummins Engine Plant is getting $75 Million to convert 360,000 sq ft. of its facility to hold zero emission components and electric powertrain systems. They estimate this will create roughly 250 new full-time jobs.

Other states benefiting from these grants are Georgia, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Maryland, Michigan, Illinois, and Ohio. In total the Department of energy awarded $1.7 Billion across these 11 facilities.

This is a part of the Biden-Harris Administrations Domestic Manufacturing Auto Conversion Grants program which is working to ensure that the U.S. can continue to be a world leader in auto-manufacturing and compete in its evolving landscape.
