COLUMBUS, Ohio ( WCMH ) – All eyes in downtown Columbus will be on the sky on July 3 for a couple of reasons: the Red, White and BOOM! fireworks and the weather leading up to them.

No one wants storms, but organizers have prepared for them just in case. They’re hoping for a repeat of Tuesday’s beautiful weather.

“This is exactly what we’d want tomorrow but we don’t know exactly what we’re going to get,” said Shawn Verhoff, Co-Executive Director, Red, White and BOOM!

Ohio fireworks law: Is it legal to set off fireworks at home?

He said no matter what the weather is on the day of the big event, his team is ready.

“This is my 25th year doing the event so we’ve seen a lot of different weather,” he said.

There’s a chance storms could move through downtown Wednesday afternoon and evening, according to Storm Team 4 meteorologists. Whenever someone hears thunder or sees lightning, they should find shelter. For those downtown, that could mean going inside a building, getting inside a car, or sheltering inside a parking garage if that’s the best option.

“The general message is come down, enjoy yourself, watch the weather, and be prepared,” Verhoff said. “We’ve noticed that when people see the weather coming, they usually kind of go into their cars, they go back to where they came from. Essentially and they wait it out there.”

Vendors set up on Tuesday. They said they are ready for the weather as well.

“If it rains they’re still staying, they’re still buying, so we’re still going to do well no matter if it rains or not. The people are here already,” said Chris Leadbeater, owner of Giuseppe’s Concessions.

Organizers of Red, White and BOOM! never want to change the times of any of the day’s events, but Verhoff said that’s an option if necessary.
