Greg McElroy Reveals What Ohio State Can't Do in Upcoming Season

    By Shane Shoemaker,

What is an acceptable outcome for Ohio State football in 2024? Would a College Football Playoff berth be enough, or is it really national championship or bust?

That's the sentiment that seems to be coming from the Buckeyes fanbase, fair or not, regarding the upcoming 2024 season.

College football analysts like Greg McElroy seem to have joined in on that thought as well, though maybe with a less denoting approach than the Buckeye faithful.

While on his show Always Football , McElroy explained that with all the significant moves Ohio State has made during the offseason through transfer portal additions and another impressive recruiting class, in addition to their returning roster from last season, the Buckeyes have set themselves up not to fail.

“They obviously have a high ceiling. They also have a crazy high floor,” McElroy said. "This is a team that absolutely cannot disappoint this year. They can’t. It’s almost impossible.

“Look at the additions that they made this year in the offseason … and the pieces that return off last year’s team to begin with. This is a team that just flat out can’t disappoint."

Even though Ryan Day owns a 56-8 record as head coach, it's what he hasn't done that's rubbing Ohio State fans the wrong way. He hasn't won a national title yet. And maybe worse, he hasn't beaten Michigan in the last three years.

That's why Day went out and grabbed guys like Alabama safety Caleb Downs, Ole Miss running back Quinshon Judkins, and Kansas State quarterback Will Howard out of the transfer portal. That's why he brought in Chip Kelly to be his offensive coordinator.

“For us, it’s natty or bust,” Howard said , while at the Manning Passing Academy. “I mean, there’s no doubt in my mind.”

Expectations are always high around Columbus, but they might be even higher for the upcoming season.

Ohio State will begin their season on Aug. 31 against Akron at home.
