Ohio State head football coach Ryan Day and Fox college football analyst Joel Klatt agree that the Buckeyes’ past few seasons have come down to a handful of downs. Day kept Ohio State in the national championship conversation since he took over, and there’s never been more optimism for one of his teams than entering the 2024 season.

Day hasn’t lost many games as head coach and he’s made some great memories while racking up the wins. When Klatt asked what he would consider his favorite play call as head coach, Day took him back to 2021 when the Buckeyes faced off against Clemson in the Sugar Bowl.

“One of my favorite plays was in the Sugar Bowl when Justin [Fields] took that hit against Clemson, and we were up a score or two but it was still a big spot in the game. I ran over to the tent, he was in the tent, and he had that look in his eye like he was not going to come out of that game,” Day said.

Buckeye fans remember exactly what happened next.

“We put him right back in and ran a rollout pass to the right. It was like a stutter come back to Chris Olave,” he said. “I felt like if we got him on the run because he’s such a great athlete he might be able to throw that to him and just will it in there, and he did. After we got done and we threw the touchdown pass he literally just kept running back into the tent.”

The Buckeyes came out with a win but lost to Alabama in the College Football Playoff championship. However, this season, Day will have his best chance of finishing the job.
