Ohio man sentenced for killing a killer in Franklinton home

A man who had gone to a Franklinton home in May 2021 to help clean up a homicide scene, only to kill the man who called him, will spend more than 10 years in prison.

Anthony Rogers, 38, of the Near East Side, entered a guilty plea to a count of involuntary manslaughter for the May 9, 2021, death of 44-year-old Carlos Benito.

Judge David Young sentenced Rogers to 12 years in prison.

Rogers shot Benito while working with 35-year-old Jami Sherrill in a drug and human trafficking ring.

In June, Young sentenced Sherrill to a term of 28 to 33 ½ years in prison .

During Sherill's sentencing hearing, Assistant Franklin County Prosecutor Dan Meyer said Rogers shot Benito after going to a home on the 400 block of South Glenwood Avenue to help Benito clean up the scene of another shooting.

Benito had shot 42-year-old Jeremy Bickerstaff at the Glenwood Avenue home, Meyer said, adding that when Rogers got to the home, he shot Benito and another man then got into Sherrill's car and left the scene.

The other man survived his injuries.

Rogers assisted Sherrill in running a human and drug trafficking ring with several drug houses in Franklinton and the Hilltop, court records say.

Rogers had been scheduled to go to trial in August but changed his plea Thursday with little fanfare.

As part of his plea, charges of aggravated murder, murder, felonious assault and having weapons under disability were dismissed.
