Rachael Lillis, one of the pioneers of anime voice acting, has died at age 46. While she voiced many characters over the years, her most famous roles were Misty and Jessie in the Pokemon anime. She spent eight years playing those and various other characters on the show and is mourned by millions across the world who were touched by her acting.

Rachael Lillis passed away after a brief struggle with breast cancer on August 10, 2024. News of her death came via an update from her sister on the GoFundMe page set up to collect donations toward her cancer treatments. Any funds remaining (or new donations) will go toward a memorial service for Rachael and cancer charities.

    “Hello everyone,

With a heavy heart, I regret to say that Rachael has passed away. She passed peacefully Saturday night, without pain, and for that we are grateful.

She is with God, the angels, and family that has passed before her, surrounded by infinite Love.”

Her Pokemon co-star, Veronica Taylor also shared the news via X:

“It is with a very heavy heart that I share the news of the passing of Rachael Lillis on Saturday evening, 10 August, 2024. Rachael was an extraordinary talent, a bright light that shone through her voice whether speaking or singing. She will be forever remembered for the many animated roles she played, with her iconic performances as Pokémon’s Misty and Jessie being the most beloved. Rachael was so thankful for all of the generous love and support that was given to her as she battled with cancer. It truly made a positive difference. Her family also wishes to thank you as they take this time to grieve privately. A memorial is being planned for a future date.

    with love, Veronica”

Lillis will be missed. Next time you hear Jiggypuff or Goldeen’s sassy cries, or hear Misty and Jessie’s iconic voices, think of the woman who gave the roles her all and went down in voiceover history.
