    Garbage truck fire on 680 near Monument Boulevard

    ( KRON ) — All lanes are open hours after a fully loaded garbage truck caught fire heading north on I-680 north of Monument Boulevard Tuesday, according to the California Highway Patrol. The truck caught fire at around 9:14 a.m. It had compressed natural gas (CNG), according to Contra Costa County Fire Protection.

    The CHP closed all northbound lanes on 680 north of Monument. The three left southbound lanes have also been closed. Northbound 242 lanes were also closed.

    As of 4:20 p.m., all lanes were back open. Residual delays are expected.

    The fire threatened vegetation and structures on the opposite side of a sound wall, according to ConFire. Crews stood by and provided structure protection to an adjoining neighborhood, ConFire said.

    The cause of the fire is unknown at this time, the CHP said. Drivers are being advised to avoid 680 in the Walnut Creek/Pleasant Hill area if possible. Traffic delays are still expected.
