20 people displaced after fire at Rancho Cordova apartment complex
RANCHO CORDOVA – Firefighters say an early morning fire at a Rancho Cordova apartment complex could have been a lot worse if not for the quick actions of crews and a neighbor. Metro Fire of Sacramento crews responded to the scene at the Cobblestone Apartments early Tuesday morning and found flames between two buildings. The flames appear to have started in some vegetation and then spread to one building's attic space. Crews were able to limit the damage, stopping the flames before they could spread any further. A neighbor called 911 and woke up his fellow neighbors during the incident, getting them out to safety. "This fire could have been a lot worse. With the vegetation bumping into those units, this fire could have spread through the entire building," said Metro Fire of Sacramento Battalion Chief Parker Wilbourn. No injuries have been reported, but about 20 people have been displaced due to the fire. Exactly what started the fire is under investigation.

Dewan: Streamlining the teacher credentialing process
Teaching is a rewarding career. A major shift in California may make it easier for those aspiring to have a career in education to obtain a California teaching credential. Gavin Newsom on June 29 to address the teacher shortage and reduce roadblocks to the education profession, candidates in most credential programs no longer need to provide additional evidence of competence in basic skills if they hold a bachelor’s degree or higher from a regionally accredited institution of higher education. Prior to SB 153, options for meeting the basic skills requirement included the following:

California 'smash and grab' burglars arrested after string of gun store robberies
Federal authorities Tuesday announced the arrest of six men on suspicion of a nine-month-long smash-and-grab burglary spree targeting gun stores across Southern California. Starting in October 2023, the men — four teenagers and two in their early 20s — are accused of stealing vehicles and then ramming those vehicles into gun stores where they would ransack display cases. The federal indictment alleges that the scheme used other stolen cars as getaway vehicles.
