Since receiving an offer from the Miami Hurricanes in May, Gulf Shores (Ala.) four-star linebacker JaMichael Garrett has felt the love from the Canes, and that was solidified on June 15, which was the first day coaches could reach out to 2026 prospects.

“The relationship has been good since they offered me,” Garett told CaneSport. “I hear from pretty much the whole coaching staff, and they encourage me a lot, and we’re building a relationship, so that’s good.”

Shortly after midnight on the 15th, nearly the entire Hurricanes staff reached out to the 6-2, 200-pound linebacker, which was something that stood out to him. While Garrett had already considered Miami one of his top schools, seeing that only piqued his interest in the program.

Along with Miami, Garrett says he is also high on USC, LSU, Auburn, and Michigan.

“That made me feel like a priority,” Garrett said. “Miami was already a top five school for me, so that definitely put them higher on my list.”

When asked what attracted him so much to the Hurricanes, Garrett, who is the No. 125 overall prospect in the 2026 class according to the On3 Industry ranking, raved about the rich history of the program and the number of players that they have sent to the NFL over the years.

Along with that, Garrett believes the program is heading in the right direction under third-year head coach Mario Cristobal .

“Really, the culture of Miami,” Garrett said when asked what stood out the most about the Hurricanes. “Also, how many players have they put into the league. And just everything that goes around Miami is just great.”

While Garrett has yet to visit the Hurricanes, he will be in Coral Gables on July 27 once the recruiting dead period is over. On that visit, he hopes to connect with both the Hurricanes staff and current players.

“I want to see how the coaches act in person and the brotherhood,” Garrett explained. “How close players are, and just everything. In college, everyone has nice facilities and great coaches. The relationships are what I look out for the most.”

    CaneSport’s take

Getting Garrett down on campus in July is a good sign for the Hurricanes, who are looking like a real contender early in his recruitment. With Miami’s staff now allowed to contact 2026 prospects, they have made Garrett feel wanted in Coral Gables, and he will be one we keep a close eye on in the coming months.
