Review: New Donde Yubra Is Taste of Colombia in Coral Springs

CORAL SPRINGS, FL - Donde Yubra is a hidden gem for those eager to explore the underrated depths of Colombian cuisine in Coral Springs.

This restaurant, formerly known as El Colombiano, has transformed in the past 18 months under new ownership in the Coral Palm Plaza. The new name and a recent redecoration have breathed fresh life into the establishment.

Step inside, and you'll find a small grocery section featuring popular Colombian snacks and candy, which adds an extra layer of authenticity to the dining experience. The lively decor, complete with colorful pennant banners, creates a warm and inviting atmosphere.

During a recent lunch outing, we sampled the "Super Patacon."

This appetizer, substantial enough to serve as a full meal, consists of three large, fried, crispy green plantain discs, pounded flat, topped with shredded seasoned beef or chicken, Colombian white cheese, and a drizzle of pink sauce. It's a generous portion meant for sharing between two or three people. While Cuba and Puerto Rico have their own plantain dishes, Colombia has perfected it. Make sure to request the homemade hot chili sauce for an extra kick.

Pair your meal with an Aguila beer or, for the adventurous, a shot of Aguardiente Antioqueño, a traditional anise-flavored Colombian liquor that’s reminiscent of ouzo or sambuca. The combination enhances the authenticity of the experience.

While the service can be slow due to the kitchen being manned by a single cook, the friendly staff and the delightful flavors more than compensate for the wait. Spanish is helpful here, though an English menu is available.
