Iowa City man arrested after series of alleged domestic assaults. An Iowa City man was arrested over the weekend after a series of alleged domestic assaults. According to police documents, the first incident occurred December 22nd at the Super 8 hotel on First Avenue in Coralville. 34-year-old Olufemi Dehinbo of Shady Glen Court and his intimate partner had been living in the room together for over a month when the assault occurred. He had fled the scene before police arrived, and the victim reportedly had a hard time catching her breath because she had been screaming for hours. She had a bleeding bite mark on her finger, allegedly caused by Dehinbo.
Iowa City woman charged with OWI after driving off demolished bridge
IOWA CITY, Iowa (KCRG) - On June 29th, 2024, a 45-year-old woman was arrested after driving into a construction zone and driving off a bridge. Investigators say Rosalia Chavez Amaya drove a 2015 Ford Explorer into a clearly marked construction zone and around equipment and signs and then off a demolished bridge. Chavez Amaya allegedly had bloodshot and watery eyes, slurred speech, and smelled of alcohol when officials arrived on the scene. Responders conducted a field sobriety test and she blew a 0.120% BAC.

Coralville motel guest accused of assaulting police after calling them himself
A guest at a Coralville motel is accused of assaulting police after he himself called them to check on his sick wife. According to arrest records, 48-year-old George Jackson of Westwinds Drive in Iowa City was staying at the MainStay Suites on Holiday Road when he called 9-1-1 at 1:30 Friday morning to report that his wife was very intoxicated and was vomiting. Arriving Coralville Police say Jackson refused to let them into the room to check on his wife’s welfare. Jackson allegedly shoved an officer out the door. He later reportedly elbowed the same officer in the head as police were trying to get Jackson’s pants up.
Iowa City woman accused of stealing stolen IPhone, using stolen card at convenience store
An Iowa City woman was arrested after allegedly selling a stolen cellphone and using a card stolen during the same incident at a local convenience store. Police say 38-year-old Bridget Dual of Sycamore Street used the card, which had allegedly been stolen during a residential burglary committed earlier that day, twice at the Casey’s on Highway 965 on April 4th during the 5am hour, spending over $35. Later that morning, Dual went to SmartphonesPlus in Coralville at around 11:15 and sold an IPhone 14 pro that allegedly had been stolen during the same burglary. She received $451 for the device, which is valued at $999.99.

A pair of Iowa City roommates was arrested after a reported dispute with convenience store staff over a lack of fried chicken. Iowa City Police say 23-year-old Cardaeja Jones and 47-year-old Martina Smith…who live together on Cross Park Avenue…were at Kwik Star on Keokuk Street just before 11:45 Thursday night when they became upset that there were no more eight-piece chicken boxes on the hot food rack. The two allegedly began following an employee around the store, despite being told that they had been trespassed and the police had been called.

Eighteen-year-old Sumaya Thomas was arrested after she called 911 and fabricated a story to avoid a date with a man she had met on a dating app. The two had planned a romantic evening, but when the man arrived at her doorstep on June 16, Thomas got cold feet and decided to call the police.

A cellphone in a stolen backpack led Iowa City police to the location of the suspected thief Saturday night. Police took a report of a stolen backpack containing various items, including a cellphone. The victim was able to track the phone using a location sharing app, and led the officer to the residence of 32-year-old Willie Collins of South Van Buren Street.
Convicted felon facing child endangerment charges faces new firearms charges
A convicted felon already facing child endangerment charges now faces weapons charges after he allegedly illegally used a firearm at a local gun range. 45-year-old Alfred Washington was originally booked into the Johnson County Jail in May after his 15-year-old son reported that his father had beaten him with wooden paint stirrers, an electric cord, and his own fists. A second alleged victim reported Washington had beaten her with a belt and struck her in the chest. Both children’s’ injuries were corroborated by investigators.
University Of Iowa Settles Harassment Complaint With Professor
(Iowa City, IA) -- A University of Iowa professor has agreed to resign after an investigation into harassment complaints against him. The Cedar Rapids Gazette reports that the University, Attorney General's Office, and Board of Regents are entering a settlement agreement with Thorsten Rudroff that will see him resign rather than be fired.
Suspect accused of stealing $2,000 bicycle from Coralville apartment building
Coralville Police say a suspect stole a $2,000 bicycle from an apartment building on the Iowa River Landing. 42-year-old Eric Kelley of 1st Avenue is accused of entering the nearby Banks apartments on East 7th Street at approximately 2:00 on the morning of May 16th, taking a bike that did not belong to him, and riding it out of the building. Investigators say the entire incident was captured on security video.
Arizona man with potentially fatal BAC level arrested for OWI after crash on I-80 in Iowa City
An alleged drunk driver with a potentially fatal amount of alcohol in his system has been arrested after a crash on Interstate 80 in Iowa City. Iowa City Police were called to an accident involving a 2010 Ford Crown Victoria on westbound I-80 near the Dubuque Street exit just before 9:15 Saturday night. Investigators say the driver…20-year-old Gregor Pratt of Peoria, Arizona…had an open can of “The Beast” hard energy drink under his seat, with a half-empty box of the same Monster-produced beverage on the side of the road. Paramedics say Pratt was in and out of consciousness in the ambulance. Pratt reportedly showed signs of impairment, and his breath alcohol level was measured at .375% on a portable Breathalyzer test. He refused Datamaster testing.
