Julie R. Johnson/Corning Observer Corning Fire Chief Tom Tomlinson said it was a complete loss for a home that burned June 16 on El Verano Avenue in Corning.

Corning volunteer firefighters responded to a structure fire at 552 El Verano Ave., in Corning leaving a garage destroyed and a home damaged.

Corning Fire Chief Tom Tomlinson said the fire department was called out to the blaze at 9:14 p.m., June 16 where firefighters were met with a fully engulfed garage.

With assistance from Corning Rural Fire and CalFire station 12, firefighters battled the blaze which resulted in water and smoke damage to the attached home, and fire damage to the structure’s rafters.

The cause of the fire, Tomlinson reported, was accidental ignition as a result of the property owner doing yard-work.

There were reported explosions in the area, which Tomlinson explained were possibly from tires burning in the garage.

Two Corning Volunteer Fire Department engines responded to the fire, along with 12 firefighters, a squad truck, Pacific Gas & Electric, and firefighters from Station 12.

Firefighters cleared the scene at 11:20 p.m.

Estimated financial loss as a result of the fire is $150,000 to the structure and $100,000 to contents, Tomlinson reported.

He contacted the Red Cross to provide assistance to the home’s occupants.

No other structures in the area were damaged, according to reports.
