Steuben County advises caution as residents and crews clean up after severe storms

STEUBEN COUNTY, N.Y. ( WETM ) — Nearly 9,000 people are still without power on Tuesday after severe storms rocked the Twin Tiers, with potential for more storms on Tuesday.

The Steuben County Office of Emergency Management released a statement Tuesday morning, July 16, saying that utility crews are working to clear roadways and reestablish power throughout the county.

According to NYSEG, 8,604 customers are currently without power throughout Steuben County, with no official word for when the power will return online.

Steuben County Director of Public Safety, Tim Marshall, recommends drivers use caution today when on the roads as there are still downed power lines and trees across the county.

“Safety is our utmost priority,” Marshall said, “we urge residents to stay clear of down lines. Use caution around damaged trees and while operating portable generators,” he said.

Marshall advises caution of the hot and humid conditions outside on Tuesday, with the possibility of more severe storms in the afternoon.

Marshall said that cooling centers are available at any local library or use a local restaurant or grocery store.

In the City of Corning, the Summer Parks Program at Denison Park, Houghton Park, William Street Park, and Stewart Park will not be open today as planned due to the storms and will be postponed to open tomorrow, Wednesday, July 17.
