About 70 new low-cost housing units for families are now among Corpus Christi’s affordable housing portfolio.

The Palms at Blucher Park — located at 213 and 218 S. Tancahua St. — was developed partially on property where a fire station, vacant for decades, once resided, according to city officials.

Development of the apartment complexes amounts to an investment of about $20 million, a figure that includes among its funding sources $16.6 million in low-income tax credits, as well as about $1 million in the city’s federal housing funds, said City Manager Peter Zanoni in a broadcast news conference Friday.

Eligible residents of the complexes, developed by TG100 Inc. PROSPERA Property Management, earn 60% or less of Corpus Christi’s area median income, according to a city-issued news release.

Several speakers at the news conference cited affordable housing for families as integral to a larger community’s functions. As part of her address, Prospera Property Management President and CEO Jacque Woodring naming it as “part of city, county and state infrastructure.”

Residents of all income levels should “have access to safe and good living conditions,” said Mayor Paulette Guajardo, describing affordable housing as “a crucial element in the fabric of our thriving city.”

“The cost of living in many urban areas … where job opportunities are usually more abundant is exceedingly higher,” she told the audience of the news conference prior to the complex’s ribbon-cutting. “So housing such as this makes it even more important when families are looking.”
