Berkeley juvenile severely injured in fireworks mishap
Berkeley police issued another warning about the dangers of illegal fireworks after a child suffered a severe injury in a fireworks mishap on July 4th.Police said dispatchers received a call at about 9:51 about a juvenile who needed medical attention after a firework exploded in their hand on the 1800 block of Fairview Street. Officers arrived along with medics from the Berkeley Fire Department and found a juvenile "who sustained a significant injury to their hand," police said. The victim was taken to the hospital; police did not disclose the nature of the person's hand injury. There were several people at the scene when officers arrived, and police said a second juvenile had minor injuries but was not hospitalized. "This is a reminder that fireworks are both dangerous and illegal and can be life-threatening," police said in a press release.

Berkeley approves fleet of Lime rental e-scooters
A fleet of rental e-scooters rolled onto Berkeley streets Monday. Lime is now permitted to place 200 rental e-scooters in Berkeley, a city spokesperson said. Lime’s scooters join those of its competitor, Veoride, which has operated in Berkeley since 2022 and is currently approved to operate up to 625 devices — a combination of e-bikes and scooters.
Driver in West Portal crash that killed family of 4 pleads not guilty
A 79-year-old woman pleaded not guilty Friday to charges of felony vehicular manslaughter related to a car crash that killed a family of four at a bus stop in San Francisco's West Portal neighborhood in March.Mary Fong Lau remains free before trial. San Francisco Superior Court Judge Kenneth Wine forbade her from driving, but refrained from putting her under house arrest as prosecutors requested.
