Nine years ago today, CalMatters started publishing journalism to hold officials accountable, reveal unseen community issues and empower Californians. Our nonprofit newsroom has grown steadily over time, but this year has been especially unique: We added The Markup’s tech-focused team, hosted the inaugural CalMatters Ideas Festival in Sacramento, debuted the government transparency tool Digital Democracy, and started airing on California TV five nights a week through PBS SoCal.
Trial begins for accused Shasta County murderer Steven Schlapia
REDDING, Calif. — Wednesday, July 17, was the first day of testimony in the murder trail of Steven Schlapia, accused of killing 47-year-old Jimmy Schwerdt in March 2022. Schwerdt is a member of a well-known Redding family. His father, Jim, is a retired long-time coach at Enterprise High, and his high mother, Nancy, worked in the Enterprise front office. A lot of support for the family, with friends gathering around Jim and Nancy in the courtroom in the trial in front of 12 jurors and 4 alternates.
Summer camp helping vulnerable Shasta County kids canceled due to nearby Shelly Fire
SHASTA COUNTY, Calif. — A camp for vulnerable Shasta County kids has been canceled as a result of the ongoing Shelly Fire in Siskiyou County. Each summer, Redding’s Pathways to Hope for Children leads Camp Hope at Kidder Creek in Siskiyou County, offering a mentorship program for Shasta County kids impacted by domestic violence and other trauma.
Governor appoints another new Napa County Superior Court judge

Redding police arrest 2 fraud suspects
RED BLUFF, Calif. - The Redding Police Department arrested two fraud suspects on Tuesday. This investigation began in April, when police said they began an investigation into Chintal Upadhyay and Shriram Upadhyay for fraud. Police said Chintal and Shriram defrauded an elderly victim in Redding of $60,000 in cash and gold.

Redding officers honored for DUI prevention efforts; tragedy inspires action
