MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Six people were rescued from the Hatchie River in Covington, Tenn. after making a 911 call saying they were lost.

The Tipton County Fire swift-water team, along with the Covington Fire Department, Millington Fire swift-water team, the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency, and the Tipton County Sheriff’s Department responded to the Hatchie River around 4 a.m. Sunday.

The responding crews deployed from the Highway 54 and Highway 51 boat ramps, following a cell phone ping that dispatch had acquired from an earlier 911 call.

The Tipton County Fire Department thanked all the agencies that participated in the rescue and also issued a reminder to those on the water.

“This is just a reminder that the local rivers can be very dangerous, and you should always be prepared for any changing weather conditions. And as always, make sure you wear a life jacket and have a plan should an emergency arise.”
