The Butler County Coroner’s Office identified the man as Logan Cumberland, 37. They didn’t release any other information about his death.
Officers and federal agents with guns drawn spent hours canvassing Cranberry Highlands Golf Course and the nearby woods while residents were told to shelter in place.
“This is very unusual,” said Cranberry resident Michelle Nemtuda.
“It’s not something that happens every day,” added resident Bonnie Lukens.
It all started, according to Cranberry Police, around 10 a.m. Tuesday when golf course employees found a man and a car along a private road on the course’s property.
Investigators say the man was speaking incoherently and told employees he was having car troubles.
“These employees recognized that there were weapons inside the vehicle at the time, specifically seeing long guns and there was a weapon described to us as an AR-style long gun in the vehicle,” said Cranberry Chief Kevin Meyer.
The employees called the police, but when officers arrived, the man was already gone.
Employees and golfers were sent home and a manhunt ensued.
Investigators say the car turned out to be a rental.
Inside they say there were concerning notes, with at least one mentioning security at a UPMC facility.
“They found some notes inside the vehicle that were extremely concerning to the officers, indicating that this person was not mentally stable and possibly wanted to do harm to either himself or others,” Meyer said.
During the hours-long search, neighbors stayed in their homes, waiting for an update from police.
“Of course, like when I heard that I wasn’t really going to take any chances of possibly running into him because it’s right up the road,” Nemtuda said.
Cranberry Police announced shortly after 3 p.m. that the situation was over. On Wednesday, Pennsylvania State Police said Cumberland was “fatally shot” by officers
