'Mothers' Instinct' Filmed Almost Exclusively in Cranford Will Open This Week

CRANFORD, NJ - "Mothers’ Instinct," a psychological thriller filmed almost entirely in Cranford in 2022, will finally make its US debut this Friday, July 26.

The film, which stars Anne Hathaway and Jessica Chastain, is set in 1960 suburban America. It’s about two next-door neighbors and best friends who have boys that are similar in age. A tragic accident begins to unravel what once seemed like perfect lives.

Holly Street in Cranford was used as the setting of the homes and neighborhood for the production. During the summer of 2022, residents could be seen watching the cast and crew with both Hathaway and Chastain sightings widely reported on social media.

Cranford resident, LeeAnn Melofchik had a memorable encounter with Hathaway that summer. “She was incredibly nice,” said Melofchik to TAPinto Cranford.  “I asked her if I could please take her photo and she said, ‘I’ll take one with you.’ ” She then introduced herself to Melofchik as Annie and the two posed for a photo together while making small talk. Hathaway seems to always enjoy coming home to New Jersey, having been raised in nearby Millburn.

The film, which first premiered in Argentina on January 11, has been released in 26 countries to mostly positive reviews. When the movie opens in the US this Friday, it will come home to Cranford Theater, which will be one of only a few theaters in NJ debuting it. "Mothers’ Instinct" will then become available on digital platforms on August 13.
