CRANFORD, NJ – Sandra Jakubuik always loved to run around with her friends. She was so quick, her parents asked if she wanted to join the Westfield Area YMCA Flyers Track Club in September 2023. By December, she had qualified and ran in the Junior Olympics in Kentucky. “I love running because it keeps me active,” Jakubuik told TAPinto Cranford. “And it challenges me to be better.”

Sandra set her club record this season by running the 3000m race in 12:07 at the regional meet in the girls 11-12 age group (she doesn’t turn 11 until September, but it’s determined by birth year). She also set a personal record in the 1500m with a time of 5:33.

Sandra and her family are now at the USA Track & Field (USATF) Junior Olympics this week in Texas, along with two other runners from the Flyers Track Club. The Hillside Ave student ran the 3000m final on Tuesday and finished 27th overall in the nation! Her next race is the 1500m on Saturday morning.
