CRANSTON − An investigation is underway after an inmate died Friday at the Adult Correctional Institutions , according to a department spokesman.

Correctional officers checked on the prisoner at the Intake Service Center shortly after 4 p.m. when his cellmate informed them the inmate needed medical attention, according to J.R. Ventura, chief of information and public relations for the state Department of Corrections.

Responding officers found the inmate unresponsive, called for medical assistance and began lifesaving measures, Ventura said. The inmate was taken by Cranston Rescue to Kent Hospital, which later notified Corrections staff that the inmate had died, Ventura said.

The Rhode Island State Police and the state Department of Corrections investigative unit are investigating , as they do any time an inmate dies, Ventura said.
