As the temperatures soar nearly a hundred degrees, Central Louisiana school regions are tackling the issue of lack of air conditioning on school buses. This problem affects 80% of the region's school buses, including 65 of the 82 buses in Avoyelles Parish, prompting concerns for students' wellbeing in the current heat emergency.

After the Governor John Bel Edwards declared a state of emergency, local districts took necessary immediate action. For instance, Avoyelles Parish equipped all buses with ice chests filled with bottled water, ice, and cold towels. It helped students avoid overheating. Furthermore, arrangements with local Y-Not-Stop gas stations provide bus drivers with free ice and water refills.

On the other hand, Rapides Parish is planning to better the travel conditions for students. Even though 79 of their 278 buses currently lack air conditioning, they are adding 25 new air-conditioned electric buses to the fleet. The new addition will be purchased using funds from the Environmental Protection Agency and is expected to arrive by November. In contrast. In Grant Parish all buses have air conditioning system, thanks to tax-supported funding. As the mercury continues to rise, schools are realizing the importance of finding long-term solutions.
