Family has identified the man shot by Crookston Police last weekend at a homeless shelter as Christopher Junkin, of California.

An officer fatally shot Junkin on the evening of June 30 while responding to a fight that broke out at the Care and Share homeless shelter.

Junkin was "being combative towards officers," according to Crookston Police Chief Darin Selzler.

When Junkin did not follow the officer's verbal commands, officers shot "non-lethal rounds" before one officer opened fire. Despite lifesaving efforts, he was pronounced dead at the scene.

It's the second time Crookston police have fatally shot a civilian in recent months, following the killing of Andrew Dale, 35, on May 16.

Junkin's niece, Amanda Elliot, has posted a GoFundMe in hopes to raise money for Junkin's cremation and "to get him back home to be with his family."

According to the fundraiser, Junkin "had a big heart and gave the best bear hugs." The fundraiser has raised $245 of its $10,00 goal.

He leaves behind three children, and any additional money raised will go to them.
