Cullman City Schools renovations continue

CULLMAN, Ala. – With students away from campuses for the summer, Cullman City Schools is full steam ahead working on renovations and improvement projects across several campuses to prepare for the 2024-2025 school year.

The Cullman Middle School expansion and renovation is arguably the biggest project taking place this summer, with footers and foundation work for Phase 2 (the new CMS building will be three-levels, including a basement) underway. New windows are also being installed in the original main building, while some old office space in the original building is being converted into new classroom space. The thoroughfare connecting the new building and original main building is also being widened.

The CMS project includes the construction of 14 classrooms; a piano lab; a Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) lab; a library; a temporary space for the band room; guidance offices; a nurse’s office; and administrative offices. The second phase includes excavation for the basement that will house the permanent locations for the band room, choir room, agriscience classroom/shop and Family and Consumer Science classroom/lab. The two levels above the basement will be connected to the first phase creating one continuous building. Once the second phase has been completed it will add 15 classrooms, including specialized spaces for art, health science, science labs and a classroom specifically designed for students with special needs.

At East Elementary, new floors are being installed in the library; Cullman High School is receiving new floors in the computer lab on the second floor of the library. At Cullman City Primary School, a new playground is being added to the east of the new second-grade wing on campus. New fire alarms are also being added in the original CCPS building.

Work is also underway on an Outdoor Learning Center that will be located at the corner of Hoehn Drive Northeast and Stadium Drive Northeast that will be available for all CCS teachers and programs to use.

“I am very proud of our school board and their commitment to the Student Safety and Growth Plan they launched three years ago,” Superintendent Kyle Kallhoff said. “We may stay busy year-round, but it’s that comprehensive vision for our school system that keeps our schools ahead of the curve and ensures they’re among the safest in Alabama.”
