Cumberland County Elementary has a new assistant principal. During the Thursday, May 2 meeting of the Cumberland School Board, members voted to place Pamela Stepko in that position. Currently, Stepko serves on the Cumberland County Elementary School Intervention Team. She takes over from Wendy Tillet, who becomes the school’s new principal on July 1, when Virginia Gills officially retires.
Stepko has a Bachelor of Science degree from Longwood University and a Master of Science degree in Educational Leadership, also from Longwood University. She completed her student teaching at Cumberland Elementary School prior to accepting a teaching position at Nottoway Public Schools, where she was the Lead Teacher for Blackstone Primary School.

She also served her administrative internship at Cumberland Elementary School and received her endorsement in administration and supervision from the Virginia Department of Education. At CCES, Mrs. Stepko taught Pre-K, second grade, and third grade, and she served as assistant principal at CCES before stepping into her current role as interventionist, which she requested after expanding her family.

Stepko has experience in curriculum development and alignment, facilitating professional development opportunities, and designing assessments. She was the recipient of the 2016 Impact Award for Region 8, given by the Virginia Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development (VASCD). This award is presented each year at the VASCD Annual Conference to one educator for each region. The winner must exemplify excellence in teaching, learning, and leadership. In 2022, Mrs. Stepko was also awarded the prestigious Milken Award, which Teacher Magazine nicknamed the “Oscars of Teaching.”

“I am excited to see Ms. Stepko step back into the school administration,” said Cumberland County Public Schools Superintendent Chip Jones. “She has breadth of knowledge that will assist Ms. Tillett in moving CCES forward and continuing the momentum initiated by Ms. Gills and the entire elementary school team.”
