A 30-year-old woman from Fitzgerald has been charged in connection with the death of a four-year-old child.

According to officials with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI), agents were contacted on Wednesday, July 24, by the Fitzgerald Police Department to investigate the child's death. The GBI reports that the child was left unsupervised in an apartment and later gained access to a vehicle.

The child was found unresponsive inside the car and was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced deceased.

On Thursday, GBI officials announced that 30-year-old Kelsey Monaco of Fitzgerald has been charged with felony murder and cruelty to children. She has been booked into the Ben Hill County Jail following the issuance of a warrant.

    The investigation is ongoing.
