On Wednesday, the U.S. Department of Energy announced it would provide an additional $53.6 million to 14 state and territorial weatherization offices to expand weatherization assistance programs.

Part of the Sustainable Energy Resources for Consumers (SERC) program, the grants will provide low-income households with energy saving measures and materials not traditionally included in the DOE’s Weatherization Assistance Program. The grants will cover expanded retrofits of low-income residential buildings and use a wide range of technologies like solar photovoltaic panels, cold climate air source heat pumps, and triple pane windows.

“As the nation wrestles with extreme weather intensified by climate change, the Biden-Harris Administration is ensuring that Americans in every pocket of the country, regardless of income, have access to the clean energy tools that make their homes more resilient and efficient,” U.S. Secretary of Energy Jennifer M. Granholm said. “We are infusing new technology and flexibility into the Department’s long-standing Weatherization Assistance Program, investing in more low-income households and creating more clean energy jobs.”

Awards ranged from $500,000 to the state of Pennsylvania which will ultimately go to Lawrence County Social Services for its SERC program, $25,136,550 to the state of New York for its Housing and Community Renewal BIL SERC project.

The grants are part of the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. The DOE said it expects the projects will provide benefits to disadvantaged communities through new partnerships with public and private entities that will reduce the energy burden on low-income families and support clean energy jobs.
