The Arizona Multihousing Charitable Foundation this week announced more than $200,000 in grants to organizations seeking to create more affordable housing and safer communities across the state.

The AMCF, the philanthropic arm of the Arizona Multihousing Association, donated $46,870 to Phoenix-based UMOM New Day Centers, and $46,870 to the Southwest Autism Research and Resource Center. Another $7,500 was donated to the Julie Hurst & Steve Peters Education Fund in Phoenix. In Southern Arizona the foundation designated $75,250 for the HSL Center of Opportunity in Tucson and $29,140 to Interfaith Community Services.

“These organizations do valuable work providing resources and services to Arizonans in need, with a focus towards housing and education” said Courtney Gilstrap LeVinus, president and CEO of the AMA, in a press release.

AMA members have distributed about $1.5 million in grants statewide since 2005.

    Of those receiving grants:

    • UMOM New Day Centers provides shelter, housing and services each night for nearly 700 at-risk women and children experiencing homelessness. UMOM also offers over 550 units of affordable housing across the Valley.

    • The Southwest Autism Research & Resource Center conducts research, provides evidence-based practices, disseminates training and builds inclusive communities for individuals with autism and their families. AMCF supports their First Place Transition Academy, a structured program that helps build crucial independent living and career-readiness skills.

    • The Julie Hurst and Steve Peters Education Fund provides post-secondary educational scholarships to employees of companies that are members in good standing of the AMA or to their immediate family members.

    • In Tucson, the HSL Center of Opportunity was created in 2007 by Humberto Lopez to support causes related to education, health and welfare, including purchasing a motel in Tucson to provide holistic support for the homeless community.

    • Interfaith Community Services in Pima County is for those who have nowhere else to turn. The programs enable seniors and people with disabilities to stay safe and independent in their homes.
