A young lady who competes in track has gotten off to a fast start to her season and that has led to Mikayla Chambers being voted the Pontiac Daily Leader's Athlete of the Week, this time for the week of Feb. 26-March 2.

Chambers placed second in the 400-meter dash with a time of 1 minute, 1.76 seconds at an indoor meet at Illinois State's Horton Fieldhouse. This is after a pair of first-place efforts the week before at Olivet Nazarene.

Chambers garnered 171 votes, which was 42 percent of the overall total on the Athlete of the Week poll this week. Payton Semmens of Pontiac received 117 votes (29 percent) for second. There were 406 votes cast.

The rest of the nominees were Maria Long and Sienna Metz of Pontiac and Aubrey Phillips and Lizzie Uphoff of El Paso-Gridley.

Each week we nominate a group of stars and you get to go and vote in our poll. The voting at pontiacdailyleader.com ends at noon each Friday. You can email Erich Murphy at emurphy@gannett.com by 9 a.m. each Monday to submit a potential nominee who may be placed on the ballot.
