A beach in Cape May was shut down after a man was found dead, authorities said.

Cape May police found the roughly 50-year-old man's body early in the morning on Monday, Aug. 26, Cape May County Prosecutor Jeffrey Sutherland said in a news release. His body was discovered on Cove Beach near the end of Beach Drive.

The man's death wasn't considered suspicious.

"There is no threat to the public and the preliminary investigation has revealed no foul play is involved," Sutherland said.

Cove Beach was closed for several hours because of the death investigation, the Cape May Police Department said in an alert at 7:24 a.m. People were asked to avoid the area between Cove Pavilion and Cape May Point State Park during the investigation.

    The beach has since reopened.

Anyone with information about this case should call the Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office at 609-465-1135 or Cape May police at 609-884-9500.
