Garrison rushing attack puts damper on Mustang Senior Night
Every team expects a few bumps in the road when faced with a new season with a coaching change. Teams do their best to learn and execute the system as fast as possible. Unfortunately for the Hughes Springs Mustangs, they stumbled in their season opener at home against Garrison as the Bulldogs used a powerful rushing attack to pick up a 72-0 win over the Mustangs. Tigers’ 2nd half surge leads to season-opening win over Gladewater
Leading by one point at halftime of their season opener Thursday, the Daingerfield Tigers needed just one play in the second half to swing the momentum to their side. Aeryn Hampton scored on a 70-yard touchdown run on the first play of the second half to extend the Tigers’ lead and Daingerfield finished the game on a 33-13 run to pick up their season opening win at Mickey Mayne Stadium over Gladewater, 53-32. Brahmas fall to Winnsboro in season opener
The Pewitt Brahmas looked to open their season with a home win over Winnsboro a year after suffering through one of the program’s toughest seasons. Unfortunately, the “rugged Red Raiders” lived up to that billing as they won the season opener at Brahma Stadium, 59-6. Winnsboro finished with 366 yards on the ground and 244 yards through the air. HSISD approves 2023-24 budget, payment policy for employees’ unused state leave
The Hughes Springs School Board approved the 2023-24 budget at a special meeting Aug. 25. The approved budget is $14,378,736, an increase of 2.30 percent from last year’s budget, and the tax rate is $0.868371 with $0.7887 for maintenance and operation and $0.079672 for interest and sinking. Total taxable values in the district are $282 million. The board also approved the food services budget at $641,300 and the debt services budget at $204,855. Also approved was a new policy regarding payment for accumulated unused state leave upon retirement and a longevity pay program/ stipend for employees. Chamber of Commerce announces plans for 2023 Daingerfield Days
The days of summer are nearing an end, but the days of Daingerfield are well on their way as the annual Daingerfield Days approach. The festivities will begin Oct. 7 with the Daingerfield Days Golf Tournament at the Daingerfield Country Club. Proceeds from the event will fund local scholarships. The official kickoff will be Oct. 13 with a BBQ cook-off. The cookoff will be an officially sanctioned statewide event. The cookoff is slated to be set up on Webb, Frazier and Scurry streets. Longtime owner of The Naples Monitor dies at 85
Morris Garland Craig, a name synonymous with The Naples Monitor newspaper for 67 years, passed away Saturday, August 19, 2023, at his home in Naples at the age of 85. Craig was born December 24, 1937, in Douglassville, Texas, to Hardman Craig and Dovie Lee Kennedy Craig. A celebration of life service was held Saturday, August 26, 2023, at the First United Methodist Church in Naples with Dr. Chas Carlisle officiating. DLSISD examines options for scoreboard at Mickey Mayne Stadium
The “eyes of the Tigers” could see a new scoreboard at Mickey Mayne Stadium in the future. Representatives from ACE Sports visited the Daingerfield- Lone Star ISD school board meeting last Monday presenting options for a possible new video scoreboard at Mickey Mayne Stadium. ACE Sports, based in Little Rock, has provided video scoreboards to high schools and colleges, including Liberty- Eylau High School, West Orange-Stark High School and Abilene Christian University. HSISD discusses 2024 budget, federal grant funds at meeting
The Hughes Springs ISD school board took another step toward their budget for the new school year during their monthly meeting Aug. 14. The board previewed the proposed 2023-24 budget, with the vote on the budget to be held during a meeting this Thursday. The proposed tax rate is $0.868371. The school’s estimated budget is set to be $14,309,122 – a 1.83 percent increase from last year – with an estimated revenue of $14,335,701. STAAR scores show continued struggles in math, reading
Texas public student scores in standardized testing continue to improve since the pandemic, but more than half of those taking the test still struggle with math and just under half read below grade-level, the Texas Tribune reported. Students in grades three through eight took the State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness tests in math and reading last spring. Lady Tigers fall in 2 games on the road
The Lady Tigers volleyball teams traveled to Jefferson Tuesday night. The Varsity squad played three competitive sets, falling by scores of 25-18, 25-22, and 25-19. La’Nyecia Lewis and Aaryanna Wallace led the team with eight service points each, with Wallace serving two aces. After falling in the first set, 25-6, the JV1 team improved in the second set before falling, 25-18. Sara Hughes led the team with three service points. The JV2 team won their first match of the season, 25-22; 25-17. Kaidence Mason led the team with ten service points, including six aces. The Lady Tiger varsity traveled to Harts Bluff Friday, falling on the road, 25-21, 2515, 25-16. The varsity squad hosted CHAAMP on Tuesday and will play in the Hooks Tournament this weekend.

Lady Mustangs 2nd at home tournament; Lady Brahmas reach bracket semifinals
, The Hughes Springs Lady Mustangs finished second in their home tournament, held Thursday-Saturday. The Lady Mustang JV reached the Silver Bracket consolation final, falling to Alba-Golden. The Pewitt Lady Brahmas reached the Silver bracket semifinals before falling in a three-set thriller to Pittsburg. The Pleasant Grove JV won the tournament title, with Linden-Kildare claiming the Silver bracket title. Also playing in the tournament were Rivercrest, Ore City, Wolfe City, Arp, Harts Bluff, DeKalb, Elysian FIelds and Clarksville.
Six injured in wreck
At about 8:30 a.m. to 9 a.m. on August 2, the lives of the Rangel family from Chapel Hill was changed in a “ jaw-dropping” experience. In swerving to miss an 18 wheeler, Mrs. Rangel, driving the family’s Chevrolet suburban at about 55 miles per hour, crashed heavily into a light pole. The impact was so severe that the Jaws of Life device had to be used to extract at least one child, and three of the children had to be air lifted to various hospitals. Daingerfield man arrested in shooting
A Daingerfield man was arrested Aug.17 in connection with a shooting in Omaha the same day. Jerry Wayne Satterfield was arrested by Morris County deputies near his home in Daingerfield and taken to the Morris County Jail. Satterfield was arrested for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon F-2 and bond was set at $15,000. At 6:04 p.m. Aug. 17, Morris County Sheriff ’s Department officers responded to a call of shots fired at 400 White Oak Ave. in Omaha. The caller told the department the shooter left the scene in a 90s model Ford Truck. MCSO Sgt. Kellie Hooper along with officers from Texas DPS and the Lone Star Police Department located the victim, Stephen Babcock, who had been shot in the back. Babcock was taken to an area hospital for treatment. The weapon believed to be used in the shooting was located and seized for evidence. Officers with the Daingerfield and Naples police departments assisted in the investigation.
